We often pass judgements too quickly and too inconsiderately; this is the case for everyone – even though we wouldn’t be the first to admit. As I traveled through numerous small towns and deserted streets I couldn’t imagine living there; everything seemed foreign and outdated, slow and lacking an axiomatic characteristic. I was unable to distinguish this truth from any other, which made me feel that something was missing in every small town. The people, their mannerisms, and complete way of life was alien to me; I felt as if I was standing outside the fishbowl looking in on some horrible experiment.

I felt bad for them, and they did not deserve my pity. They were proud, and wouldn’t have accepted any even if I had expressed it.

Every person I talked to was happy. Complacent and content, maybe, but overall happy, or at the very least entertained. They found a way to enjoy the small community, familiar places, their routine, and their surroundings. They did not find fault in anything. I was wrong to place myself and my experiences above theirs. Their home was not my home, and it was difficult to remember that and the lens through which I was observing them. I did not realize this until I returned home. Once I did my home seemed vaguely similar; long stretches of straight road, a gas station every 5 miles, a singular strip mall, and a Dollar General.

It is home to all of us because it is where we learned about life, grew up, and established our own routines and friendships. Everyone has a childhood, past experiences, and a unique lens through which they observe the world. Their opinions are just as true and deserving of recognition as our own. Sure, some may not be knowledgeable on politics, philosophy, or physical science, but by no means are they inferior. If we place ourselves above others we commit the truest injustice; the right to a fair trial. The second we assume or stereotype people we are imposing our experiences unto them, and by default, we place ourselves above them. We must remain from subjecting others and keep an open heart and mind. We are all deserving of a fair trial. We may not be in high court, but even amongst peers everyone deserves respect.
